Chabako, tea box in japanese, is the sister of the famous indian wooden crate from Darjeeling, which are so sought nowadays.
It was traditionally used for bulk tea preservation, its trade and its transport in big volumes to the tea houses. It is however a wonderful known-how and a traditionnal piece with a sober and elegant design.

As in India, its use in the tea world is today particularly rare. They are both replaced by standard and cheap material. The chabako manufacturing is fading in Japan, and stays unknown out of its boundaries.

Cedar wood has been chosen for its qualities : rot-proof, humidity, fungus and bugs resistant.
Inside, tin leaves protect the tea. Each edge is covered by shofu (a japanese adhesive wich is food-safe) to avoid air inside the box, because tea is very sensitive to oxygen, humidity and light.

Tea bo for tradition, or tresure box for all what you care about. Chabako are a touch of asian decoration in our occidental homes.
