Gyokko workshop, in Tokoname city, welcome the art of Umehara family. One of them is well-known as "Tokonameyaki Tranditional Craftman". They use indeed the famous regional red clay, which had properties (richness in iron) and aesthetic popular at many eras. They work it with wheel, kiln and hands.

The technique applied to realize this tea pot is named "Kokudei", which describes its dark color. This shade is achieved with a specific firing with rice husks (for example). In the fire, husks will leave a carbon layer on the tea pot surface.
The Tokoname red clay can also darken and blacken with "reduction" : it is when there is a reduction of the oxygen rate in the kiln. In such conditions, oxidation process makes iron oxide reacting and changing color and texture.
